#MotherTonguesUnited: (Re)Cultivating the Narrative of a Joyful Konbit”
Join us on Monday, October 23rd at 6:30 PM EST on as we celebrate International Month of Creoles. Co-sponsored by NYU’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, this is the perfect time to reflect on the idea of a konbit. In Kreyòl Ayisyen, a konbit is a gathering of folks working joyfully together toward a common goal. Join us in conversation with Junior Duplessis (founder of Kreyòl Language Blog Kreyolizasyon) and Glenda Lezeau (Haitian Mental Wellness Advocate), two Kreyòl Language Advocates working creatively and collaboratively to promote the Kreyòl Language. We will be exploring questions like, “What does creative content building look like in Kreyòl?”, “How do we use Kreyòl Ayisyen to cultivate and tap into self care in the Haitian diasporic community?” and “What does joy look like for folks who speak historically undervalued languages?”. Facilitated by Wynnie Lamour-Quansah, Professor of Haitian Creole at NYU CLACS, the goal of #MotherTonguesUnited this year is to discuss how the Kreyòl language is a tool for cultivating joy.
This discussion will take place in English & Kreyòl Ayisyen and will be followed by a Special Edition of the Kreyòl Spelling Bee where participants can compete for a small cash prize!
Food & Drink will be provided.
